I'm thinking of changing the name of this blog from 'The Latham Family' to 'Road Rage Rants' cuz seriously, I could go on and on. And, there are enough stupid drivers on my commute each day to continually fuel my rants (ha ha). If you guessed that there was a stupid driver in front of me tonight then yes, you are correct! I had just pulled out from work and it was a tan Toyota Sienna van and it almost cut me off and then proceeded to go - no exaggeration - 10 km/h. Usually the traffic does not move that slow and I was a tad bit late so I was a little antsy to get moving so you can imagine how impressed I was. Finally - finally - we got to the intersection where I turn (of course he was going the same way) and I zoomed off into the other lane so I wouldn't have to be behind him anymore. But, as we proceeded down the bypass, he decided he wanted to be in my lane, so as we're coming up to another intersection, he signals and just starts moving over, even though I'm clearly in his blind spot. (Does that even work? Clearly in his blind spot? If he had shoulder checked he would know I was there, but his back windshield wasn't cleaned off so obviously people behind him were the least of his worries) I honked - I'll take any excuse - but that didn't work, he kept moving over. So I leaned on the horn for like 15 seconds straight. That worked and I zoomed past. Seriously! Some people!

I Won!
Last night Michael and I decided to play a game of Settlers. I'm not sure why I agreed to this, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. I should preface these remarks by saying that of all the times we have played Settlers, I have won maybe 3 times. We hardly ever play anymore but we used to play a lot.
Anyways, at the beginning I tried to put my settlements on good numbers, and banked pretty heavily on there being quite a few 10's or 11's rolled. Unfortunately for me there was only one 10 and about three 11's rolled the entire game. I literally started to fall asleep because I had no cards coming in, couldn't do anything and was losing pretty badly. But then, slowly but surely, I started to pull ahead and woke up enough to sneakily build my road long enough to get the Longest Road card and next thing I knew I had 18 points! (you need 20 to win, we were playing with the expansion pack). Then Michael noticed I had 19 points and tried to do something about stopping me but it was too late! I built my last city and won the game! Just in time too - next turn he was going to turn over his third soldier card and then he would have gotten the Biggest Army card and I would have had to work a little harder. I was pretty proud of myself. Michael is a bad loser and was accusing me of cheating (I didn't) so I told him that it was a good thing he didn't have to lose very often. He left the game on the table, so I'm not sure if that means he didn't get to putting it away or if we're going to have a rematch tonight. I'm not sure whether to revel in my victory or see if I can win again...

Windchill
I was going to post a little thing this morning when I got up because I was mad, but as usual, I was running late (why am I always late in the morning???)
However, now I think I will. It is -33 outside right now, and when you add in the wind, it feels like -45. -45 Seriously! That's like a joke, but let me tell you, it is cold out there. The ONLY good thing about it being this cold is that usually there isn't any ice on the windshield.
Anyways, I just wanted to express my displeasure with this stupidly cold weather...that's all I have to say.

Recipes
I promised my mom I would send her a bunch of recipes about 3 months ago, and I keep putting it off. So I thought I would post them on here and maybe more people could try them. I can speak for all of them except the Crab Chowder which I have not eaten. They are all good, easy yummy healthy recipes, some of my favourites. I'm not a huge seafood fan, but my mom loves that fake crab meat you get in the seafood section and that's what we used for the Crab Chowder. It was more a gumbo than a Chowder and she said it was really good.
Perogies (from the previous post - except don't use whole wheat flour!)
Weight Watcher’s Recipe
2 small to medium potatoes, cubed
1/3 - ½ cup cheese
1 tsp onion powder
2 cups all purpose flour
1 egg
1/8 tsp salt
Water as needed (about 1 cup)
Cook potatoes in a saucepan on the stove, boil 8-10 minutes or until potatoes are fork tender. Drain and mix in cheese and onion powder with a fork until smooth.
Meanwhile, combine flour, salt and egg in large bowl. Add water, about 1 tsp at a time, until a still dough forms. Roll dough out on a large surface and use a drinking glass to punch out circles about 4 inches wide. There should be enough dough for 16 circles. Top each circle with 1 spoonful of potato cheese mixture. Fold dough over, making a half moon shape and pinch edges to seal.
Place perogies in rapidly boiling water for 5 minutes to cook and then either barbecue or pan fry.
Pork and Black Bean Stew
Makes 4 servings
2 tsp olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 pound boneless pork loin, trimmed of any exterior fat, cut into ½ inch cubes
2 tbsp chili powder
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 pickled jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
1 ½ cup water
1 (15 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed
2 tbsp corn grits - I just use quick cooking oats
¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
1 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice
Heat the oil in a large nonstick saucepan set over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring, until softened, about 2 minutes. Add the cubed pork and cook, stirring often until browned, about 4 minutes.
Add chili powder, cumin, cinnamon and jalapeno; cook until aromatic, about 20 seconds. Pour in the water and beans and stir well to scrape up any browned bits on the bottom of the pan. Bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer very slowly for 15 minutes.
Stir in the grits (oats) and cook until thickened and intense, about 15 more minutes, stirring quite often to prevent sticking. Stir in cilantro and lime juice; serve at once.

Halibut Baked in Packets
Makes 4 Servings
4 (5 oz) skinned halibut fillets, or other white fish fillets such as sea bass, red snapper, tilapia or basa.
12 cherry tomatoes, halved
4 artichoke hearts, packed in water, drained, rinsed and halved (I don’t put these in)
1 yellow squash, diced (about 1 cup) (I use a medium butternut squash)
1 green bell pepper, cored, seeded and thinly sliced
6 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 tbsp plus 2 tsp chopped fresh dill or 2 tsp dried dill
1 tsp salt
½ tsp freshly ground pepper
Preheat oven to 500F. Place each fillet on a 16 inch long piece of parchment paper or nonstick aluminum foil. (I use the non stick baking paper and it works fine, you just have to twist the top so it stays closed) Top each fillet with 6 tomato halves, 2 artichoke halves, and ¼ of the squash and bell pepper. Sprinkle 2 tsp lemon juice, 2 tsp fresh dill or ½ tsp dried dill, ¼ tsp salt and 1/8 tsp pepper over each. Seal and crimp the packets closed and transfer them to a large rimmed baking sheet.
Bake in the preheated oven for 12 minutes. Transfer to serving plates, let stand for 2 to 3 minutes, and serve. (since the steam is hot, you’ll want to open any served to children). You might want to check that the squash is cooked and soft before letting the packets cool down, sometimes it needs a little longer in the oven.

Crab Chowder
Makes 6 Servings
2 tsp canola oil
1 medium onion, chopped
3 ribs celery, thinly sliced
1 ½ cups frozen corn kernels, thawed
1 tsp dried thyme
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper
2 cups no salt fat free vegetable broth
1 cup fat free evaporated milk
1 bay leaf
1 small baking potato, peeled
¾ pound lump crabmeat, picked over for shell and cartilage
1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro
3-4 dashes Tabasco sauce, optional
Heat the oil in a large saucepan set over medium heat. Add the onion and celery and cook, stirring, until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in the corn, then the thyme, salt and pepper and cook 20 seconds, until fragrant. Pour in the vegetable broth and evaporated milk and add the bay leaf. Stir well, then cover and simmer 5 minutes.
Using the smallest holes of a box grater or an old fashioned potato grater, grate the potato into the chowder. Stir well, cover again, and simmer another 5 minutes, until slightly thickened.
Add the crab and cilantro and cook until crab is just heated through, about 1 minute. Stir in the Tabasco, if desired. Serve at once.

Kraft 4 Cheese Italiano Vegetarian Lasagna
Makes 8 servings
1 cup each finely chopped onion, zucchini, sliced mushrooms and eggplant
1 can Primo Tomato Sauce
1 cup water
2 eggs, beaten
1 300g pkg frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained
3 cups Kraft 4 cheese Italiano Shredded cheese
¼ cup Kraft Parmesan Cheese
15 Lasagna noodles
Saute vegetables in a bit of oil in a large frypan until soft. Add pasta sauce and water. Simmer 5 minutes. Combine eggs, spinach and cheeses. Spread ¼ sauce on the bottom of a 13x9” pan. Arrange noodles on top. Spread 1/3 of cheese mixture over noodles. Repeat layers twice, ending with sauce. Top with additional cheese. Bake at 350F for 60 minutes or until bubbly.
Never content to just leave the recipe the way it is, I usually leave out the eggplant, double all the vegetables, and add about ½ a container of lowfat ricotta cheese to the spinach, egg and cheese mixture. This lasagna actually tastes really really good, try it!!

(I am making this dish this week and can't wait...it is soo good!)
Slow Cooker Stuffing
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped onion
1 tbsp parsley flakes
2 tsp poultry seasoning
½ tsp summer savory
¼-½ tsp sage
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper
10 cups dry bread crumbs - just rip the bread
¼ cup margarine or butter (half the amount works just as well)
1 tbsp chicken bouillon powder mixed with 1 ½ cups water
Optional: mushrooms, apples
Saute onion and celery, set aside. Mix bread crumbs and spices, add sautéed celery and onion, mix well. Dissolve margarine in chicken bouillon mixture and mix into bread crumbs. Cook 5-6 hours on low in slow cooker or in an oven at 350F until browned and crusty.
This dish is also very good when cooked with chicken breasts. I put my chicken breasts around the outside of the slow cooker so the stuffing was all in the middle and the chicken was very tender and flavorful.

More Pictures
Aidan and I made our Gingerbread house kit on Sunday finally. He had a great time and thought it was really fun. It turned out pretty good actually.
I was making dinner and so Aidan decided to make 'cake'. The black squares were chocolate, the orange ones were orange, green was lemon - and he was very concered that we be careful of the peel - yellow was pineapple and I forget what red was. He also made tea for us in the cups.

A Mini-Rant
So I had quite the morning today.
Yesterday Michael went out to start the car before making a quick grocery run and discovered that both the cars were stone dead. Fortunately there are usually a couple people hanging around the church parking lot, so he was able to get someone over to jump the focus and then from there he worked on the sebring.
We're going to be plugging the cars in from now on.
The only good thing about that is that at least it happened mid afternoon on Sunday instead of Monday morning. That would have been seriously un-cool. Or really cool...however you want to look at it. So I got the car started and we headed out - late of course - and made it across town without incident but when I turned into the Crystal Lake subdivision, it appeared they were trying to do something about clearing the streets. For the most part, the subdivision is made up of little cul-de-sac's off the main street and you can imagine how clogged up with snow it gets!
Near the entrance a big loader was clearing snow - Aidan was very impressed but was sad that we couldn't stay and watch. He was also upset because Tad, his little Leap Frog buddy, hadn't seen the loader. But, as we got closer to Darlene's house, traffic slowed down because there were 3 graders working on clearing the road. They were going mainly down the middle of the road, so the middle and the sides were getting piled up with snow and I didn't think my little car was going to make it across, so I parked on the side of the main road and told Aidan we'd have to walk. While we were behind the loaders Aidan made sure Tad had a good look, holding him up to see the graders working and saying 'Look Tad!'. They're actually pretty cool to watch and I was happy that someone was doing something about the snow!
We got out of the car and were standing by the side waiting for a break in traffic when a grader stopped for us to cross. Aidan was a little in awe of being within inches of such a large machine and hustled his butt across the street in front of that thing. I think he was a little afraid, but at least I didn't have to worry about coaxing him to hurry up! The graders must have made a couple passes while I was dropping Aidan off because the middle pile of snow was considerably higher and I had a little difficulty getting over it. I was just so thankful that I was wearing my boots! Not my winter boots - I haven't yet worn them this winter though I probably should...they're just cheap ones I got down in Abbotsford my first year of Bible College so I don't know how warm they would keep my feet...but they might keep them warmer than some of my shoes!
Anyways, I continued on my way to work, now with only 6 minutes til 8:30 and I still had to make it across town! Of course I got stuck behind 2 vehicles carrying oversized loads but luckily managed to get around them before I got on the bypass. I am so sick and tired of being the smallest thing on the road and driving with semi's and weird huge oilfield trucks!! Especially when the big trucks don't have good manners, I'm always afraid they're just going to move over and squish me off the road. One time one did and I honked for a good long time and he moved back. I wish my horn wasn't so wimpy - but at least it works!
I finally got to work, got my coat off, punched in, was just getting started on some work, when someone pointed out to me that I had a huge tear in my pants!!! I couldn't believe it, randomly, in the middle of my right thigh, is this big rip in my jeans. It was so weird, not on a seam or anything. So I hopped back in the car to go home and get some new pants.
The rest of the day was definitely less eventful, just cold. It is seriously freaking cold here. I wish I could just stay in a warm shower all day, that would be so great. I'm cold constantly, at work, in the car...I don't normally start the car before I leave at the end of the day, but it was close to -30 and I should have, it was bitterly cold. It was so cold the my breath was fogging up the windshield and I had to put the fan on high so I could see. It's supposed to warm up a little by the end of the week with highs of -18 - doesn't that sound weird, a high of -18? But hey, it sure beats what we've got now.
I'm sure most of you noticed my new addition of a little weather button, courtesy of the Weather Network on the righthand side of my blog. This is just a shameless ploy to make you all feel bad about complaining about temperatures that are not really cold.

Very Important Events
I'm getting tired of posting without any pictures, so I took a couple of Aidan this morning. He got this cool Lite Brite cube from his Nanny and Papa for his birthday. It's got a Lite Brite on one side, a white board on another, a tracing surface on another and the last side is a black colored 'white' board.
Our camera takes a couple seconds to take the picture, so I had it all set up, I got his attention, he looked, and then by the time the picture was taken, he had turned away and was being grumpy.
I can't type very well today because last night I was trying to open a box of chocolates with a pair of scissors and somehow I literally sliced my finger open. The weird thing is that this morning when I took the bandaids off, the cut looked completely different, like it was in a different spot than last night.
Yesterday we tried out a new babysitter and it went very well. I got her name from Brooklyn's mom, and the idea was to try her out this weekend and then hopefully get her to babysit for my Christmas Party next weekend. But...she plays hockey and next weekend she has a tournament in Dawson Creek so that won't work. Aidan loved her and she seemed to enjoy hanging out with him so that's good. Michael and I went to see The Fountain yesterday while Brandi was with Aidan. I thought it was going to be completely different than it actually was. The description of the movie starts off with 'The Fountain is an odyssey about one man’s thousand-year struggle to save the woman he loves.' So I thought it was going to be 3 or 4 little stories set at various points throughout history - maybe including current or future - about 2 people who keep meeting and falling in love or something like that, and they're the same people. If that makes sense. It was a tiny bit like that, but a whole heck of a lot weirder. Very independent and artsy - so I'm surprised that it came to Grande Prairie. I am now 2 for 2 with the movies I've seen this weekend. I saw Stranger than Fiction on Thursday evening and it was a bit of a disappointment as well. It seemed really funny in the previews, but probably because they showed all the funny parts and it was really short. I don't think it lived up to it's potential for funny-ness.
After our movie Michael and I came back and took Aidan out to Superstore and Costco. I can't remember the last time we've been grocery shopping all together - maybe a couple months ago. It was only supposed to be a couple things, but you know how that goes. On the way over we were listening to Kids Stuff on Sirius Satellite Radio and the Wiggles came on singing Willaby Wallaby Woo which is one of Aidan's favourite songs. He gets quite silly when we sing it. We sang about elephants sitting on Aidan and Teddy and Mommy and Daddy. When we sang about Daddy, then Aidan would say 'Daddy! Sit on you Daddy!'
The other Very Exciting Thing that happened yesterday is that Aidan finally pooped in the potty! I let him wear underwear yesterday, and then in the evening after his shower he decided he just wanted to run around naked. So he's running around and then as he runs past me he says 'I poop now' and I said 'okay' and then he comes out again and says 'Mommy! Come look! I pooped!' and sure enough, he had! It was very exciting, and he got his 3 nibs and was very happy because he had never had 3 nibs before. Then I decided to open Michael's box of chocolates and give Aidan a chocolate to celebrate and that's when I cut my finger.
Now it's starting to hurt and if we're going to church we should probably get ready, so I'm going to end this.

Snow
Currently it is snowing pretty steadily and has been for the past little while. It's crazy how much snow we have! Well not how much there is, but that it keeps coming down every day. It seems like every day. Michael's from Kitimat and up there they have massive piles of snow everywhere. It doesn't get super cold there, but the amount of snow is amazing. Up here it's just supposed to be cold, we're not supposed to have this much snow!!
I meant to post yesterday, but it just didn't happen. Tuesday night Michael was home and made waffles for all of us for dinner. He likes his waffles with butter and syrup, but when I was growing up, we had our waffles with white sauce and fruit. The fruit was usually frozen from the summer (unless it was the summer), so it would still be cold and maybe a little frozen and there would be lots of juice at the bottom that would mix good with the white sauce. I tried to make the white sauce after we were first married, but Michael thought it was just gross. He wanted me to stop and pick up some corn syrup (he makes his own syrup from Mapleine) so Aidan and I got some frozen fruit for our waffles. Aidan picked out the mix with peaches and blueberries and strawberries. If I was with it enough I too could have frozen berries in my freezer from summer. Usually they're too expensive up here or Aidan and I eat them all or I'm too busy with work and everything else. I think I would rather eat lots of them fresh and then buy the frozen packs instead of only eating a little of them fresh and then freezing the rest of them. Anyways, I digress. The waffles were really really good. In our house Michael is known as the Waffle King. Early on in our marriage we decided there were certain things that he was just better than me at. These include (but are not limited to) waffles, tacos - okay, I can't think of anything else, but I'm pretty sure there were one or two more.
It has been really cold lately! Really really really cold. Aidan's response to this is to stand on the steps and just kind of hunch over and complain that it's cold. I'm trying to get him to understand that if you keep moving and get in the car where it's warmer, it helps! It's supposed to warm up a little bit which would be really nice - unless it warms up so much that it gets slushy. I would be happy with -15 or so...right now it's about -25 and it must have been colder yesterday morning or there was a wind blowing.
We were finally able to go through with our appointment at the Mental Health Department. The third time was the charm apparently. This was to address Aidan's behavioural problems that he had near the end of August. So it was only about 3 months too late. The meeting went well, I said I felt kind of dumb for going because I'm not having any major problems with him now, but she said she could help to suggest some discipline strategies and also potty training which I am totally open to hearing about. What mother of a toddler wouldn't?? One thing I thought was interesting was that she said she didn't thing time out's were effective because they would make Aidan resent me and then it would be a power struggle. Or something like that. So....I would like to know what kind of discipline she would use that wouldn't foster resentment and not involve a power struggle, because as far as I can see, discipline in and of itself is not a pleasant thing and not greeted with happiness. Anyways, I'm always open to suggestions so we'll see what she says. She suggested I get the book 1, 2, 3 Magic so I might pick that up. I've heard good things about it from a number of people so it might be time to try it myself. Our next meeting is going to be a session with her and Aidan in their little play room and it's scheduled for next Tuesday on Michael's days off, so I don't have to miss work which is a bonus. Hopefully that will go well.
The meeting ended earlier than I had anticipated, so I decided to stop in at Walmart on my way to work and make an appointment for Aidan to get his picture taken as well as pick up a baby gift. Of course this 'small' errand took about 45 min - partly because I had to wait in line at the Photo Studio forever and partly because there are soooo many cute things in the baby section I didn't know what to choose! I found the sweetest little pair of fuzzy pink bunny slippers - even Aidan liked them. We tried them on his teddy, but didn't leave them on for long because wearing them made teddy a baby. I guess that means that teddy isn't a baby. I'm not sure where he stands in Aidan's mind, but I know that he definitely thinks of teddy as younger than him. He protects teddy from bad guys and scary things, maybe he thinks of himself as teddy's big brother.
When I dropped Aidan off at his daycare on Wednesday he ran up to play with his friends and I heard them say 'Hi Aidan! Where were you?' which I thought was really sweet, because it meant they had missed him. It's so cute to watch kids develop social skills - as long as it doesn't involve bad behaviour!
Last night I stayed up late wrapping presents. I have to get Bev a present, but I think I'm going to wait until December and do a scrapbooking gift basket. She always babysits for us and cuts Aidan's hair and never accepts any money, so I'm going to get her a good Christmas present to thank her for all that. I also need to get Aidan some stocking stuffers and get Michael what he wants once he figures that out, but other than that, I'm done my Christmas shopping! I'm very excited, this is the first year I've been so ahead of schedule. I'm going to try and mail everything the first week of December - I'm so excited for everything to be done so that I can relax.
Oh, the other exciting news is that Aidan is potty training again and this time it might actually work. The psychologist said that by now Aidan should be potty training and that if he's not interested, that I should be doing something about it. So last night we stopped at Safeway and I took Aidan to the candy aisle and I told him he could pick whatever he wanted and that would be his treat if he peed on the potty. He chose Nibs, so I told him that every time he tried he would get one Nib, every time he peed he would get 2 Nibs and if he pooped, he would get 3 Nibs. This seemed like an excellent plan to him, in fact, after we bought them he asked me if the store had a bathroom and said he needed to pee. Sure enough, with the right motivation he can do it - and was rewarded with 2 Nibs. As soon as we were home, he was back on the potty - I think he sat on that thing 4 times before he went to bed and then twice this morning before leaving for Darlene's house. I put them in a little container and he also took a little container to Darlene's house and I'm hoping that this will motivate him to finally get potty trained and stay that way!
Well, I think that's enough rambling for today. I will try to get the camera out soon and take some more pictures...we might be going to Edmonton this weekend and then maybe I can get some family pictures.

Found the Camera!
While I was cleaning up the kitchen today I ran across the camera and thought I would take some pictures. I haven't put any pictures on here for quite awhile so I figured I should do that before you all forget how cute Aidan is! And me, of course...because that's where Aidan gets all his cute-ness from! :)
Here you can see the robe that I made for Aidan. It's a navy polarfleece with a pattern of hockey sticks and pucks. He calls it his 'lobe' and likes to wear it to bed.
This is him trying to hide from the camera. The robe has a hood that comes in handy for hiding.
Michael got him this blanket when he was down at an Oilers game recently.

Here Teddy is trying to do something silly, but I think it's actually Aidan that's being silly. He likes talking this way with his tongue halfway out - it's great.I actually made perogies today! I wanted to make them but it seemed like a lot of work...it was alright. Not too bad. I used whole wheat flour so that's why they're brown. These ones here are just waiting for the water to boil...I boiled them and then fried them with onions and then Aidan and I had them with sour cream for dinner. He was very encouraging about my effort, bursting into tears when I told him what was for dinner. I think they turned out pretty good, especially for a first effort.

Marathon Grocery Shopping
I took Aidan grocery shopping this morning and I think we were gone for almost 2 hours, but it felt like we were walking around that store forever! I wanted to get him some Christmas presents while I was there, so we spent probably half the time in the toy aisles looking at different things. Michael got back from his job sometime last night and I was going to go shopping by myself and leave the two of them sleeping, but Aidan really wanted to go - I told him he could come and it was so cute, he started doing a little happy dance and saying 'Yay!'.
I was pretty proud of how sneaky I was. He picked out a Diego outfit that I hid under the gingerbread house kit and then we went to try and find some Hot Wheels monster trucks and motorcycles. Unfortunately they were all out, but there was this robot that Aidan noticed. He is so nuts about robots, it's funny. This one had a button to push and then it would say a phrase. I had a hard time getting him away from it so I could sneak back and put it in the cart under my coat. Then we went to go do the food shopping and of course I had forgotten that it was lunch time...so we grabbed a sandwich and pop. I always get so ambitious when I'm making out my grocery list and picking out recipes to make during the week. Realistically I probably need only 2 recipes but I always pick out 4 or 5. This week, as usual, I've got way too many things I can make: French onion soup (I'm trying out monterey jack cheese instead of mozzarella) with a big crusty rye french bread, Stirfry, Chicken Pot Pie or Stovetop Stuffing Casserole, Garlic Butter Chicken and Tomatoes and Rotini with Pasta sauce and Ground Beef. And I'm thinking about making perogies as well. There are so many good recipes out there, I love trying new stuff, and then there are the ones you try and they're so yummy you just want to make them again! The first time I made that Garlic Butter Chicken and Tomatoes I was so impressed. It goes really good with mashed potatoes...mmm, I might just have to make that today!
I have to say I'm getting a little tired of winter. I know, it hasn't even been a month since the snow hit, but it seems like everything is so much harder! The roads are a lot better than they were which is wonderful, but parking lots still really suck. Especially the Superstore one when you have to push the cart through the snow. The worst is pushing it all full of groceries back to the car. We're getting our starter re-installed on November 22nd and I'm very happy about that. I am tired of getting my coat and mittens and shoes on and dashing out to the car to start it and brush it off - especially when we have a starter that just isn't installed because some bonehead at Visions forgot to send it off to the service depot to get it fixed. When I get it installed I get to be mean and ask them what they plan to do to repay me for being so stupid. We sent it away the first week of August and they never sent it out from the store until almost the end of September or October, I forget. Either way, I was very very upset. The other bad thing about winter is that I'm going through gas like crazy! I just filled up last weekend I think and already I'm low enough to need another fill! I know it's because I keep starting the car early every morning, but I only let it run for about 10 minutes...and I would feel bad putting Aidan into a super cold car. If it was just me it would be different.
Okay, this whole Playstation 3 thing is CRAZY! Michael sold one on eBay and then went with Pat to pick it up and managed to get his hands on another one as well. The systems themselves aren't that bad for price...he got the 60GB one and it was around $700. Right now on eBay they're going for around $3000CDN. There is one nutcase that started his auction at $100 as far as I can tell, and currently it's at $810 - I'm not sure what his deal is. There's also another one that's going for $4000!! It comes with 2 games, but seriously! I don't know if there is anything that I would overpay that much for. Anything material I mean.
Well right now I'm procrastinating going and cleaning up the kitchen. It is a mess. And the laundry needs to be done, the living room needs to be picked up, the bathroom needs to be wiped down.....*sighs* I hate housework. Michael's week off starts this Wednesday and he promised to be a good househusband and do everything for me so I'm looking forward to that. Most especially since I'm still not allowed to vacuum or take the garbage out. Alright...I better go start.

Aidan's Word of the Day
Today's word is 'hoppin'. As in, yesterday Aidan and I went Christmas hoppin. Every time he says it he cracks me up. That and he calls his frog his 'hog' - so funny!
Well…Christmas shopping went pretty good, but I'll tell you what takes the excitement out of it – seeing your little pile of money disappear! *laughs* I picked Aidan up and he was a little grumpy, but still determined to go hoppin with me, so he calmed himself down. I had left our sandwiches out in the car and they were frozen
:( Aidan and I both tried eating one but in the end just decided to go for a hotdog and fries at Costco.
I hadn't been planning on going to Costco, just to the dollar store to get stuff for those Christmas boxes, but Michael asked me to go to Costco to check if they were getting any PS3's and so I thought I would take a look around to see if I could get any gifts there. The great thing about Costco is that even if you can't think of anything when you walk in the door, once you've walked around for a little bit you have no problem dropping at least $200. If you can walk out of Costco without spending more than $50 it's like a minor miracle. I did find a number of nice things – more than I thought I would, plus a magazine for me and a hard bottom roller duffle bag for Michael. He's needed a new bag for work pretty much since he started a year and a half ago so maybe this will do it for him. When we were on our way to the checkout, Aidan caught sight of one of those sample tables and there was no persuading him otherwise, he had to try whatever was on the table. It turned out to be a cracker spread with what looked like a salmon spread with tiny sundried tomatoes on top. Aidan took one bite and then started gagging - I couldn't help but laugh at him.
By the time we got out of there it was past 7 and I wasn't sure if the dollar store would still be open, but it turns out they're open til 9pm every weeknight. That's a good deal, I'll have to remember that. It was at this point that I had a little problem with Aidan 'needing' stuff. I guess I hadn't really fully explained to him that Christmas shopping meant shopping for presents for other people and not for ourselves. He said he wanted something at Costco – I got him a 3 pack of L'oreal Kids shampoo with a little stuffed turtle – but then when we pulled up at the Dollar Store and went in he wanted all sorts of stuff in there. We compromised with 1 bouncy ball and 1 balloon and he was good. Strangely I had a hard time finding some basic stuff on my list for the boxes. I wanted to get a toothbrush and tube of toothpaste, a bar of soap and a washcloth for each box. They didn't have any regular toothbrushes, just battery powered and travel sizes with little toothpastes. I settled for the little one since it had a cover for the toothbrush – what's wrong with stocking a regular toothbrush? They had 2 choices for bar soap, so I let Aidan pick the one with a little rubber ducky on the top. He thought it was cool and kept saying 'Ducky! Ducky!' I also for the life of me could not find crayons!! Finally I found an open box of 64 crayons…I figured I could put them in little Ziploc bags. You can't have coloring books without crayons, especially for little guys! Aidan loves getting balloons at the dollar store – they fill them up with helium and then tie a ribbon around the balloon and around your wrist and you're set to go. Once he got his balloon around his wrist he decided the balloon was the bad guy and said (to the balloon) 'I fight you!' and then proceeded to try and knock it down. It was pretty funny. He's really into the whole good guy-bad guy thing. Whenever he plays with his cars or robots there are always good guys and bad guys and they're either racing or fighting each other. Sometimes he even gives the bad guys time outs!
Anyways, we finally got home and dragged all our treasures into the house and Aidan had a snack and was off to bed late again. That meant he was up once with Michael and twice with me – so not fun! I told him that when he got up in the morning he's supposed to come wake me up and not turn his light on and start playing, so about 30 minutes after I put him to bed I hear his door open and see him standing there looking at me. I went to ask him what was wrong and he says 'Mommy told me come see Mommy!' He doesn't get that he actually has to go to sleep first and wait for morning to come before he can come see me.
Michael stayed out all night, he was arriving home just as I was going out to start the car at 7:30 in the morning. He had been out playing ball hockey the night before and then they had gone for drinks and then they had driven past Future Shop to see if anyone was out lined up waiting for the new PS3 and since there were people there, they decided to go and wait out there. He sold one on eBay and wanted to get another one to sell because he said they're going for up to $3000 now. All I can say about that is that I love my new separate bank account! He has good plans and intentions, but I still think a good old fashioned budget is the way to go. I had to go today to pick his up his PS3 after work and we were there for a whole hour waiting for someone to help us and then for them to find the games I wanted. Then they couldn't even find both games, so I had to settle with just one. By that time it was after 7, so we stopped by Subway for some dinner and made it home after 8 again. I feel bad for Aidan when it's in the door and straight to bed...that can't be fun for him.
Anyways, I'm going to go sit on the couch and work on my Christmas cards. It's almost bedtime and I need to get a jump on my weekend stuff because I have to go into work on Sunday....

Smiley Alien Pancakes
Aidan was actually in a good mood this morning when I woke him up and we made it out the door by about 7. We got to Denny's and he looked at the kids menu and picked out his breakfast:
Smiley Alien Pancakes
He was very excited about it, especially the baby pancakes at the top, which he ate very carefully with his hands. He was also thrilled with the whipped cream, dipping his finger in it and licking it off. I had the extreme slam with eggs and hashbrowns and sausage and bacon and pancakes - of course there was way too much food and I ate too much and my stomach hurt afterwards...but I think I'm done with my craving finally. Aidan helped me eat my bacon and also one of my sausages which he dipped in the butter and declared 'yummy'. So gross!
I dropped him off at Darlene's and reminded him I expected him to go down for a nap nicely ( we had had a discussion of this the night before) and also to be good when I picked him up. Imagine my surprise when I walked in the door after work and he looked up and said excitedly 'My mommy!' I still had a little trouble getting him to get his jacket and boots on, but for once, he was in a good mood, it was amazing! Darlene commented on the change in his mood and said that he was giggling in the other room earlier and she was surprised it was him. Hopefully now that she notices that the nap makes this much difference she can continue to help him to take one! He is so pleasant to be around when he's not overtired!
I had to stop at the bank on the way home and on the way home, since he was being so good and patient, I suggested we stop for a coffee. He loves drinking coffee - usually for him it's lattes or mocha's and not straight coffee. We drove into the Tim Horton's drive thru and things seemed to be moving along fine, and then I'm not sure what the car in front of us ordered, but there was a huge hold up at the window which was not cool. Aidan started getting whiny so I made up a song that we took turns singing: 'Give me my coffee and let me go home!' He had a lot of fun with that and was laughing and giggling in no time. We got our coffee's finally - a mocha for me and an english toffee cappucino for him - and drove home to drink them. I put a little ice cube in his and he sat at the table taking small little sips. I opened the little flap on the lid of mine and took a drink and had no idea what I had gotten! It tasted frothy and a little creamy and there was a definite orangey taste to it. I'm not really sure what I got. It was alright, but definitely not what I wanted! I think it might have been something with a flavour shot in it. I think I might have to break down and buy a coffee maker so I can make mocha's at home and not just at work.
I'm hoping to get those Operation Christmas Child boxes done tomorrow, so I asked Aidan if he wanted to come Christmas shopping with me and he said he did. He said he wanted to go right then, but we hadn't had dinner and I didn't have a list so I said we could go tomorrow. While he was eating dinner I made us some sandwiches for dinner and baked some cookies. I put his sandwich in a bag and wrote an A and a happy face on it so he could tell which one was his. He always wants everything right away. He saw the sandwiches I was making and I told him they were for tomorrow's dinner, so he said 'Eat now, please?' He can actually say please, and uses it frequently, it's the cutest thing. Usually if he says it I give him what he asks for because I think he's so cute when he says it. I forgot to set the timer for the cookies and forgot about them but fortunately I didn't burn them. I really need to get myself a little kitchen timer! I hate burnt cookies...so gross.
My check was big enough that I think I'll have enough extra money to go out this weekend and do all my Christmas shopping! I'm not sure why, but I'm very excited about it. Now I need to finish off my Christmas cards and get everything mailed. That's always the sticking point - getting to the post office in time. Maybe this year I can do it all before everything gets crazy, that would be soo awesome.
Well I haven't had dinner yet and I'm getting kind of hungry so I'm going to go rummage in the fridge.

Greasy Breakfast Food
Lately I've been having this need to eat breakfast all the time. Usually whenever I really want something like that I just make myself wait for a couple days or a week or as long as I can push it, and then I give in and it's done with. However, when I was home recovering from the surgery I made myself homemade Egg McMuffins...this morning I made Aidan and myself eggs, toasted english muffins and mandarin oranges and yet tonight (after eating dinner and a cookie and a Krispy Kreme donut) I was still really craving Denny's or Smitty's or somewhere gross like that. I kind of hinted to Michael, but he wasn't going for it and I wasn't going to make the effort to drive out and get it myself, so Aidan and I are heading out for breakfast tomorrow before work. He woke up - well, he was crying, he didn't really seem awake, it took awhile to get him to calm down and stop squirming around - and I asked him if he wanted to go to a restaurant and he said no, but then I coaxed him around and said that Mommy was really excited to go and then he said 'I am too'. We decided it will be Mommy and Aidan's Exciting Adventure. If I can find the camera, and remember it tomorrow morning, maybe I'll take a picture of the two of us.
Today I had a really hard time picking Aidan up from daycare and actually had to carry him out to the car and strap him in while he was kicking and screaming and hitting and biting. I emerged unscathed thankfully. I think he's having real issues with me not being able to pick him up. I wish I could, but I picked him up by accident last weekend and my stomach really hurt. That and I was going up the stairs at work the other day and started jogging up them and that hurt too. So I guess it will still be awhile before things are completely back to normal.
Has anyone started Christmas shopping yet? I'm trying to come up with ideas for friends and as usual, I'm having a hard time. Then I think that I really shouldn't be having this problem because I should know them, they're my friend! But everyone has everything already...I'm having a tough time with Aidan too. I re-organized his toys and finally got rid of that huge toy bin and I really don't want more toys to have to find places for in there! Michael got him the Cars DVD this past weekend and I'm making him save it for Christmas. I want there to be quite a few presents for Aidan to open because he's still young and that's the funnest part for them! Michael is actually on shift over Christmas this year and I'm not sure how the company works, whether they just work through like any other holiday or whether they get it off. I think they might get it off because last year I remember Michael saying something about how he wished he didn't have days off because everyone got Christmas off. We might end up having an early Christmas, or just moving Aidan's Christmas to someone else's house. It seems so crazy to be talking about Christmas already, but it is the middle of November...it's only a little over a month away! I'm thinking about actually doing some Christmas baking this year. Somehow I never get around to it, and if I do, it never turns out like my mom's, so it's not very encouraging. I guess I could start small and also start some new traditions.
Anyways, it's late and I need to get to bed! I hope everyone's having a great short week - it's already the middle of the week!

Hateful Lemmings
I was on msn.com today and there was an article there quoting John Elton as saying that religious people are like 'hateful lemmings'. Here is the actual quote:
"I think religion has always tried to turn hatred toward gay people," John said in the Observer newspaper's Music Monthly Magazine. "Religion promotes the hatred and spite against gays."
"But there are so many people I know who are gay and love their religion," he said. "From my point of view, I would ban religion completely. Organized religion doesn't seem to work. It turns people into really hateful lemmings and it's not really compassionate."
Sorry, it looks like I misquoted him, it's REALLY hateful lemmings. That made me laugh. Of course we (religious people) are going to look down on gay marriage etc., because it's wrong! Then I started thinking, I've never seen a lemming, let along a hateful or really hateful one, but if I were to imagine, I think it might look something like this.....
(I added the bushy eyebrows to make it look mad. It just looked too cute without them!)
Anyways, enough about hateful lemmings. I figured it was about time for an update. Michael has been gone since Thursday afternoon, and with all my time off last week as well as this long weekend, I'm going to be pretty messed up as far as what day of the week it is for awhile! Maybe a regular weekend this coming weekend will help me get my bearings.
I went back to work Thursday and Friday and it must have been my stomach because it felt like longer than 2 days. On Friday I said (sarcastically) 'Man it's been a long week!' Martin and Thyra just looked at me...it was kind of funny. I'm so lucky to have such an understanding boss like Al. He said I could take as much time as I needed after my surgery, paid for my days off, and doesn't mind if I bring Aidan in on the weekend for a couple hours if I need to get some work done. Although I think Tammy was getting kind of annoyed by Aidan today, so I packed him up and headed home. I had brought him in so that I could finish fixing all the invoices that I got Thyra to post. Last week she came downstairs and was wandering around saying she had nothing to do, so I got her to match packing slips to invoices and post the invoices. There were quite a few and she managed to make such a mess out of it that I had to go through every single one myself to make sure they were posted correctly. Some dates were wrong, she was posting in the previous fiscal year, she created this project that she allocated stuff to...it was a disaster. I came in this morning because I wanted to try and get it all done before Tuesday so that she wouldn't know I had to go through everything, but she was there AND had taken the new invoices upstairs to post! Tammy told me to go take the new invoices away from her, so I just went upstairs and took them off her desk. I hate confrontations, so I didn't say anything to her and when she asked me what she had done - I think she saw me going through the invoices she had posted - I just ignored her or said something else and she let it drop thankfully. I think I would make a horrible manager or boss! I'm just too much of a wuss!
This weekend I brought up Aidan's ball pit that he got for his first birthday. When he got it, the box said ages 3+ and I thought that was kind of silly because he was 1 and thought it was pretty cool, but now that he is actually 3, he can play with it properly. And more importantly, he can clean up the balls when they roll all over the living room!! Mostly it just lives downstairs because it takes up too much room in our tiny little house. Every time Aidan came downstairs with me he used to ask if it could come up and I would say no, so he stopped asking. He was very excited to see it upstairs and treated it like a very special treat, always asking before he jumped in which was pretty cute. Today he was wearing his robe and he asked if he could play in his ball pit and I said yes, then he asked if he could wear his robe in too. He pronounces a lot of difficult letters (for him) with an 'l' sound, so robe is lobe, what is lut, whoa is low, ribbit is libbit. My favourite is when I call him and he comes running up saying 'Lut, Mommy?'
Well, it's getting late and my tummy is hurting so I think I'm going to go off to bed. I think it's my own fault that my stomach is hurting because I haven't been taking it easy at all this weekend and now it's catching up with me! It was really hurting earlier, so I took some advils and then got super sleepy and lay down on the couch, it was kind of weird. I'm so happy that it's healing nicely and that I'm mostly back to normal - and all in a little more than a week. Isn't the body amazing?

Good Morning, Good Morning to you!
I'm not sure how many of you know the viagra commercial on tv, but it shows these women singing along to a song from the movie Singin' in the Rain that goes 'Good mornin', good mornin', we've talked the whole night through, good mornin', good mornin' to you.' As soon as Aidan heard it for the first time he thought it was cool and tried to sing along with it. During a hockey game on Wednesday night he heard it come on and sang along with it and then kept singing 'good mornin', good mornin' to you!' while he was finishing his dinner. It's so cute when he sings along with stuff.
He doesn't pronounce the 'g' in words ending with 'ing', so eating is eatin and sleeping is sleepin and morning is mornin. Sometimes it sounds like he has a tiny little southern accent. He saw the leftovers of my oranges and ice cream on the table one morning and said to me 'You eatin' that?' He's really doing much better at putting together sentences and also using people's names to address them. When I was picking him up at the mall on Halloween he said 'Bye Haley' to one of his little friends which was really cute. I think he's really making some good friends at this new dayhome and I'm very thankful for that. Darlene says he had been acting out a little bit when I was sick in the hospital and off work, but hopefully now that we're back in our regular routine he'll settle down a bit.
I told him if he was a good boy last night that I would take him to McDonalds today and he could choose whether to go in the morning or evening. It was a tough choice for him because in the morning he could have hot chocolate, but in the evening he could have grilled cheese. After thinking it over he decided he wanted to go in the morning and wanted pancakes and hot chocolate. We went this morning and he was so excited to be there and so excited about his pancakes, it was so cute. He finished all of his 3 pancakes and drank all his hot chocolate and just about finished his whole hashbrown - I've really noticed his appetite increasing!
I'm just cleaning up my desk and closing everything down - hope everyone has a great weekend! We've got snow coming down and reports of super slow traffic...sounds like a good weekend to stay home and drink hot chocolate!

It is November 8th and they are playing Christmas Music in the stores!
Seriously! I'm going to be done with Christmas in 2 weeks! And usually it's not even good Christmas music, usually it's the stupid stuff. I don't mind Christmas music, in fact I have even been known to put the holiday music channel from our satellite on from time to time, but only after December 1st. At this rate by the time I'm 35 I'm literally going to hate Christmas, it's awful! The one exception to this rule is eggnog. I was excited when I saw it in the stores in early October. But then we bought a couple liters, drank it and now we're done. Maybe I'll buy some more or make some more closer to Christmas...it just really really irritates me how commercialized literally everything is these days. Absolutely nothing is sacred!
Anyways. The reason I was in the store (Superstore) in the first place is that Michael unknowingly got me velour pants today. *shudders* I don't think they were real velour, but they were pretty darn close. Close enough that they had to be returned. He called me earlier to ask if I wanted anything and I said I wanted another pair of pajama bottoms that I could wear to work tomorrow, so he came home with these pink fuzzy pants. It was very kind of him to think of me and get them for me, but this would be the third pair of pink pajama pants I've gotten in the past 3 weeks - and they were velour. I wanted a solid color, but they didn't have any except the pair I was returning, so I got a broadcloth cotton pair with a white and black print. Then Michael called to say he was stuck in the snow, so I started looking around and found a couple shirts - and this is why it is a very good thing I am back to work tomorrow! Less time for me to wander around in stores finding stuff to spend money on!!
I called Michael's friend Pat's wife Michaela today. It occurred to me that with this surgery, I'm going to need a little help with shaving my legs and Michaela is an esthetician. I think that's how you spell it. Usually Michaela and I mainly ignore each other, but I think she's feeling bad for me right now, so I took advantage of that and asked if she could help me with this and now I have an appointment for a manicure, pedicure and leg wax. Why am I inflicting more pain on myself by waxing? I'm not sure. I've never had my legs waxed before, and Michaela made a good argument that with waxing rather than shaving I won't have to worry about it for awhile. Oddly I'm kind of excited about it. We'll see how it goes.
Well I've been up and around for awhile and it's back to work tomorrow so I need to get my stuff together so I can take my time in the morning. I'm planning on driving rather than getting Michael to drive so that should be interesting. Hopefully I can make it to work on time!

Update From the Couch
I'm getting kind of tired of sitting on the couch and I'm also running out of shows to watch! There were so many shows that premiered this year and it got kind of ridiculous - I didn't think I would have enough time to watch them all. Now I'm pretty much all caught up, just in time for re-runs!
Yesterday was pretty uneventful, but I ended up doing more than I should have probably. Aidan woke up in the middle of the night with a yuck diaper, so I took care of that, and then he managed to produce another one in the morning - quite a talent that boy has. Since I've been home I've been very clumsy and klutzy, I'm not sure why but it's pretty annoying. Michael and I stopped at the grocery store on the way home from the hospital and I saw this new product called Supreme Oatmeal, so I got the Strawberry Yogurt flavour. Aidan was pretty excited about it, he's really into oatmeal. I was trying to make us both bowls of this stuff and accidentally knocked one of the bowls onto the floor, spilling water and oatmeal everywhere. The night before I had spilled juice on the shelf by the bed (another benefit of sugar free juice and pop is that when it spills it's not sticky!) and then this morning I dropped a little ceramic ramekin and broke it in half - that was pretty funny because Aidan just went off and got so excited trying to tell Michael what had happened. Anyways, he had the oatmeal and declared it the best oatmeal he had ever had. Better than Apple Oatmeal (his all-time fave) and Dino Oatmeal (his current fave). I tried it and thought it was kind of gross...it's got a separate little topping pack with little circles of yogurt, freeze dried strawberries and then sugar and the yogurt was kind of yucky. While I was cleaning up the oatmeal I noticed that where I had cleaned it off the door there were clean streaks - that is just so gross, it's so dirty that where I wiped it is visibly, obviously cleaner than the rest of the door. So I had to wipe the door down and then I noticed the floor was dirty, so that had to be swept. I also tidied the kitchen and living room which wasn't crucial but sure made me feel better. Except my stomach. Michael got mad at me for doing stuff, but it's hard not being able to do stuff for yourself. Even if I ask him to do something, he would do it differently and probably not right away - it's hard to be satisfied with that. He did put together the roast in the crock pot today which is what we're having for dinner tonight. He let me supervise, so I got him to do it the way I do it which was nice of him.
Michael took Aidan off to Darlene's house - I haven't heard much from her so I assume he's doing alright there. Apparently other kids have been picking on him a little - I'm not sure whether it's actual picking on or just regular acting-out stuff, but the good news is that Aidan says he hasn't been reacting in the same way. For example, if Andrew hits him, he doesn't hit back and that is really wonderful. Yesterday he said that Sammy hit him and that then she got a time out. I asked him if he was happy that Sammy had gotten a time out because of that and he said that he was. Michael has been letting him listen to the kids stations on his Sirius Radio and says Aidan really enjoys that. He also made Aidan a couple Veggie Tales cd's that Aidan listens to when he goes to sleep.
I stayed on the couch catching up on Lost in the morning and then CSI and Close to Home in the evening. It wasn't a particularly good combination of shows because my dreams were filled with incidents and ideas associated with those shows and I kept waking up thinking I was in trouble or something. I had a nap in the afternoon (mostly for lack of anything better to do) and woke up 2 hours later totally disoriented. I thought it was night or morning and we had forgotten to pick up Aidan, but then it turned out that it was only 3:30 and that was a relief!
Michael took me out to Reitmans to get an outfit for his and my Christmas parties before picking Aidan up. I had expected a selection of dresses at decent prices, but all they had was a couple different styles in this super skinny slinky material that I absolutely refuse to wear. It's right up there with velour and spandex in my heck-no category. They did have some skirts that I tried on and was pretty thrilled to find that I fit a size 9. My stomach literally will not move, so I have to conclude that I have either lost weight or the sizing system has changed because there is no way that I can suck it in. They seemed to be obsessed with a certain neckline at Reitmans this year - I know I'm picky - and I didn't like it so after ruling out about 80% of what they did have, there wasn't much selection left. I got a cute white wool sweater which might work with a little tank top underneath, if not then it's going back. They had accessories 2 for 1, so I had fun picking out some earrings and a necklace. I haven't gone shopping by myself or with Michael in so long, it was really fun. I had totally forgotten to do anything with my hair or face, and I was hobbling around in pretty much my pajamas, and I think I'm a little paler than normal - I must have looked just awful, but I wanted to take advantage of my time off from work to get this outfit taken care of. My Christmas party (if it's still a go) is happening Nov 17th - crazy early. Oh, and while I'm talking about clothes and such, I have a question for you Rachel. I have this pair of open toe wedge sandals, black with a silver buckle that I am planning to wear (because I don't want to buy new shoes). Is it really awful to wear nylons with them or can I wear skin color ones and not black or fishnet ones - what do you think? You know my legs have always been weirdly pasty (remember Elenna freaking out over them once? I never wore shorts around her again!) and I'm so accident prone there are going to be bruises, so I thought it would just be easier to wear nylons.
Aidan's having a little difficulty adjusting to my limitations. I'm not supposed to lift more than 10 pounds for 4 weeks, no baths, only showers for 4 weeks, no vacuuming or mopping and I'm supposed to take it very easy. I never realized how much I lifted him until now all of a sudden I can't. The biggest thing is him getting into his car seat in the car, especially when Michael is going to be gone for his trip this weekend. He's been getting Aidan to practice getting in by himself, and today they brought a stool out to the car for Aidan to use, but Aidan hates doing it by himself. I feel bad for him, but I wish he would be a little more understanding! He got up last night in the middle of the night and then wouldn't go back to bed. It was so frustrating because I couldn't lift him and forcibly remove him to his room! I've tried to explain the situation to him and he sort of gets it, but he's a kid and keeps forgetting and acting up. As a treat, I got him 4 cans of different pasta and sauce kind of like Alpha-getti's. He was very excited Monday when he got home, he got to choose from Dora-getti, Bob-getti, Winnie the Pooh-getti and Dino-getti. He chose Bob and then yesterday he had Dino-getti. It's also super easy for me to just open the can and warm it up for him.
Well, I think that's enough rambling from me for today. Oh - Rachel, I tried the mocha at Starbucks and it was so gross. Way too strong. Is the peppermint mocha a lot different from the regular? Next time I'm there I thought I would try a short one and then if I didn't like it, I could just give it to Aidan. He's really into Starbucks too and loves Vanilla Latte's, Steamed Milk and Hot Chocolate - pretty much anything in a coffee cup! Do they still give sprinkles if you don't get the whipped cream? *smiles* I didn't think ahead and forgot to ask for no whipped cream on my mocha when I got it - I hate unnecessary whipped cream! Thanks for all your comments! I always check back to see if you've left any new ones. Maybe stress brings out your funny side because you seem both very stressed and also very funny *smiles*

Back Home
So I had a pretty interesting weekend. I had all sorts of plans for cleaning the house, doing my huge piles of laundry, even starting in on my Christmas shopping...but none of that happened. Saturday morning Aidan and I headed out to the Veggie Spectacular - Gideon Tuba Warrior. I let him pick out a bunch of candy from his Halloween stash, and then I bought him some popcorn and pop at the theater. Of course after all this he was pretty grumpy so I took him home. I had to do some grocery shopping and I asked him if he wanted to come and whether he would listen. He said yes, he wanted to come and he would listen, but then he kept collapsing and dropping his bear...so I thought it was time for a nap. I took him home and put him to bed and then headed out to the bank and the grocery store.
On my way out I got these really awful cramps, but I didn't really think too much of them, just planned to have a bath when I got home. When I did get home I planned to have a bath, but felt nauseous so I lay down for a bit and then had my bath. I had to get Michael to help me out, and then in the hall on our way to the bedroom to lie down some more, I just collapsed. It was pretty freaky. I came to and Michael was on the phone saying '911 Grande Prairie' but I told him I was fine. Michael said I was just lying there with my eyes open and may have been twitching. It was the strangest thing, I think that's the very first time I've ever blacked out! I told Michael not to worry, that I would just lie down and rest, but looking back, I think I should have let him either call an ambulance or at least take me in to the ER. I mostly stayed in bed for the rest of the day sleeping and watching TV, but in the evening Michael had to go work security for the Thousand Foot Krutch concert. Before he left he had been talking on the phone to his parents and his mom suggested that it might be an ectopic pregnancy. Of course since there is a possibility that I could be pregnant, then there is also a possibility that my problem could be an ectopic pregnancy. I went to the internet and looked on a number of websites for symptoms of ectopic pregnancies and one of them was that your shoulder would be sore. That kind of freaked me out because my shoulder was definitely sore and didn't seem to fit with stomach cramps. So then I figured that I might as well go in to make sure that it wasn't anything serious, so I called Michael at about 9:30 and he came back and drove Aidan and I in. He dropped me off and then went and took Aidan to McDonalds to get us all some food. Aidan actually did very well, he was happy and content to sit and eat his grilled cheese and drink his juice and my pop. At about 11:30 Pat came back from the concert where he was doing security as well and picked Aidan up and took him back to bed and stayed there which was so nice of him. Finally at about 12:40 I was called in and got to go wait in a little room for a doctor to come and see me. Michael and I waited for awhile, the doctor came and we explained the problem, she felt my stomach and went off to talk with the other doctor and then about 2 I suggested to Michael that he go home and get some sleep because it didn't look like things were going to be moving very quickly at all and I might not be home the next day. Then at least one of us would have a little sleep so we could be up with Aidan. At first they weren't sure what it was, then they thought it might be gall stones, so I was sent for an ultra sound at 9 Sunday morning. That confirmed it wasn't gall stones (for which I was thankful) but did show there was fluid in my abdomen and also that there was something, they weren't sure what, on one of my ovaries. I talked to a surgeon who had been called to look at the X-rays and he said that I wouldn't need surgery and that he would call a gynecologist who might be able to figure out what it was. I was so happy that I wouldn't need surgery, but then the gynecologist came and I told her my story again and she said that I would need surgery. She said she thought it was a ruptured cyst on my ovary but that it might be that the ovary itself had twisted or was dead, so the form I signed allowed her to go in and look around and also to remove the ovary if she had to. She said that I was going to go in for surgery in 1 hour, so I got all my stuff packed up quickly, got myself ready and called Michael to let him know what was going on. He felt really bad that he wasn't there, but someone had to be with Aidan and I didn't think there was anything that he would be able to do at the hospital except just wait.
They wheeled me up in the bed to the operating room and I got to put the little hat over my hair and everything. The lady wheeling me in said that I could work there, I looked better in the hat than some of them. I thought that was kind of weird, but maybe she was just trying to make me feel better. I was pretty nervous, but everything went very smoothly and everyone was very kind and explained everything. It was so frustrating because every single person has to hear the whole thing again and asks what seems like exactly the same questions, so I got really tired of repeating myself. And, they all want to feel my stomach and ask if it hurts. That got old REALLY quick. I just wanted to tell them that yes, it would hurt, so don't feel it! Anyways, I was scheduled for laproscopic surgery where they just make little incisions and then I think they stick something in to do their work - I'm not too clear on what happened and don't really want to know more details. When I got out of surgery I was shivering really bad, all I remember is kind of freaking out and being really cold and having a mask put over my face. Then I woke up and they were wheeling me into my room, so I assume they got me warm and calmed down. By then it was Sunday night about 6 pm. I felt pretty good considering what had all happened and could move around a little. Michael came in to see me and I was starving, so he went to get me some soup, jello and juice. I thought for sure I would eat a lot of soup, but he fed me 2 or 3 bites and I was done. I thought I would throw up if I ate more, so that was it. I was really tired, so he went back home and I went to sleep.
I managed to get a lot of sleep which was so nice. I woke up in the middle of the night and had some jello, made it to the bathroom by myself...I kept thinking there's no way I'm going to be able to sleep, but it was the middle of the night, so I lay down and sure enough, I fell asleep. In the morning I got to have jello and coffee for breakfast, and the nurse asked if I wanted a shower. I was so excited that I got to have one because I'm sure you can imagine what I looked like by then! Not that it was a big deal - obviously there are more important issues - but by then I was rivalling my post-giving-birth look. After my shower I felt so much better...Michael came to see me and the doctor also came in to discuss what had happened. From what I understand, what happened was that last month the egg that was released stayed at the edge of the where it was released, and then this month at this particular time in my cycle it started bleeding and all the pain in my abdomen was caused by the blood that was spurting out of this egg. The doctor said that it could have been really bad - but fortunately everything is looked after now and she's going to see me in 4 weeks to make sure everything is good. She was really really nice and patient and a doctor like that in Grande Prairie is pretty amazing.
I think I have learned that I am scared of needles. I had blood taken about 5 times, the first 2 times were 5 vials each and the other times, fortunately, were only 1, but I think they were running out of places to get it from! Since I had the IV in my left hand, they could only take it from my right arm and the 4th time they came to take it, they had to use a special butterfly needle because the first one they used didn't work. The IV was also pretty awful. They tried to put it in my right hand and that didn't work - and really hurt!
Anyways, I think that's enough for me for today. I'm off work probably until Thursday. I was told I shouldn't drive for a week, but the doctor said I'm free to drive as long as I'm confident in my ability to be able to slam on the brakes and if I can't do that then I'm impaired, which makes sense. I can't lift more than 10 pounds for 4 weeks, so hopefully Aidan will be understanding about that! Michael leaves for his trip on Thursday afternoon, but my boss has been super super nice about everything and said that he would make sure I was able to get home and to work on Thursday and Friday. So that's the plan right now, but we're just going to take it day by day and see how things go.
Right now I'm sitting on the couch using the laptop to blog and Michael thinks I'm crazy...I'm telling you, this blog thing is addicting *smiles*

Since when do I care about hockey?
I wore my Oilers shirt today because last night, as I was picking out my clothes, I looked at it and thought 'Hmmm...I haven't worn that in awhile. I think I'll wear it'. It was only after I got to work that I wondered if they played recently. Michael usually lets Aidan and I know when we need to wear our BC Lions or Oilers stuff. Proper protocol in our house is to wear stuff on the day that the team plays and/or the next day after they win. If they lose, you're not supposed to wear anything reminding anyone that they lost. So I got to work and Jeremy asked if they won and I said I had no idea. I figured I better see if they had and it turns out that last night they lost their first home game to Nashville!! What a day to wear it! I got comments all day, and I noticed that it became 'my' Oilers that had lost, simply because I was wearing the shirt.
So now I know. Next time I'm planning on wearing anything sports related during their season of play, I will check to see if they won and not embarass myself by wearing anything after they lose!

Pictures as Requested
I thought I shouldn't leave that rant up for too long, at least not right at the top. Today went pretty well. I left late again, but got everywhere on time, so I can adjust my morning schedule accordingly. That's good because I can't seem to get up earlier than 6:30. I tried this morning and it didn't work. I just pressed my snooze an extra time and ended up getting up at the same time. Strange. The roads are much better, which makes me a little over-confident which is not good, especially with those patches of ice. It's so tempting to drive at a normal speed, but I'm trying to remember to sloooooooow down.
I set up the mini dvd player for Aidan in the car yesterday. We have a case thing that straps to the back of the front passenger seat, so it's right at eye level for Aidan. This morning on the way to Darlene's he watched Diego's Dinosaur Adventure. I have my music on in the front so I can't hear what his show is saying, but I heard him say 'yes' and 'no' a couple times and then out of the blue he would roar and a coupld times he caught me off guard and startled me. I'm not sure why they were roaring, but it happened about 3 or 4 times during our drive. The only downside to having it set up is that when we get to our destination and the show isn't over, he's upset.
I'm so excited that we have nothing planned this weekend! I'm going to try and get some food cleaned out of the freezer for my meals next week. It's amazing how food just collects in there - it's like it multiplies or something, and then next thing you know you're shoving something in and shutting the door really quickly so it doesn't fall out!! I know I'm not the only one who does that....
Rachel, there's a reason why there aren't pictures of me on this blog...I hate my picture being taken and besides, Aidan is so much cuter. That being said, I got Michael to take a couple pictures of me and Aidan, so here you are: (tell me if you like my new hair color)

Okay, so they actually turned out better than I thought they would. This last one is pretty cute, with us doing the swiper smiles.
