April Fools Day is a good excuse to have some fun with the kids, especially Aidan who is old enough to appreciate some of the jokes. Unfortunately I forgot (again!) until a couple days before so I didn't have much time to prepare. Here's what I did:
Michael's suggestion was to melt some chocolate in a diaper and leave it on Aidan's bed. I thought that this was actually a pretty good idea, so I got a diaper from a friend (because Keira is done with diapers - YAY!!) and came up with this:
I made sure to dab some on the outside too so the brown was very noticeable. Then I positioned it carefully on Aidan's bed, folding it so that he couldn't help but see it.
When he got home and went to his room I was in the bathroom with Keira, so I got to hear exactly what happened. He went in his room and came right out again saying "Ewww!" I asked what the problem was and he told me there was a dirty diaper on his bed so I went in to see. I probably would have been a little more convincing if I hadn't been grinning like an idiot! I am the worst person ever for trying to be nonchalant while keeping a secret!
I had also saran wrapped the toilet seat - over top of the seat so he would see, but know something was up - but wanted to do something fun for dinner.
I found a few ideas online, one of which was meatloaf cupcakes with colored mashed potatoes.
I think they turned out pretty good. Keira was pretty upset that they weren't real cupcakes!
The other thing I found - that I could do with what I already had in the fridge and cupboard - was 'hotdogs and fries'. You take a banana, place it in a bun and cover it with peanut butter to make it look like a hotdog. Then you put strawberry jam and cut up kiwi (I used green jello that I had made the other day) to look like ketchup and relish.
For the fries you cut up apples into sticks, toss with cinnamon and sugar and then bake in the oven.
Voila! A hotdog and fries with ketchup!
Throughout the whole meal there was a lot of "Wait a minute! This isn't ..." or "Wait a minute! This is ... " and they seemed to enjoy having a mixed up meal :)
